Obituary

Jack Dean Simpson, 80, of Burwell passed away on Monday, January 1, 2024; at the Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell, Nebraska as a result of many health issues due to Agent Orange.

Jack was born to H.A. "Jack" and Wilma (Lilienthal) Simpson on August 2, 1943, at Council Bluffs, Iowa. The family moved to Ericson, Nebraska and lived at the CMS Ranch. He received his early education in Ericson. In 1956, the family moved to Burwell where Jack continued his education and graduated from Burwell High School in 1961. While in school he played all sports but excelled in basketball.

Following high school, Jack joined the United States Navy. He served on the USS Thomaston and USS Excel during the Vietnam War. After six years of duty, he was discharged as a 2nd Class Engineman and returned to Burwell.

On August 31, 1968, Jack was united in marriage to Myra Lindsey. To this union, a son Brent Simpson Turek was born.

Jack and Sue Ciemny were married on June 17, 1972, and the couple had a son, Shawn Dean Simpson.

Jack worked construction; helping build Interstate 80, and was also employed at the Alfalfa Mill in Burwell. The family moved to the Upstream Ranch where Jack and his son, Shawn worked side by side. In 2006, Jack and Sue settled in Burwell while Jack worked for Dave Goff until his retirement.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Sue Simpson; oldest son, Brent and Brenda Turek of Ravenna; and their family, including grandchildren, Caden & Allie Turek, Tanner and Brittany Turek; step-grandchildren, Shawn and Asia Thoene and family, and Amber Williams and family; youngest son, Shawn and Tina Simpson of Taylor and their family, including grandchildren, Shad and Jack Dean "J.D." Simpson; siblings, Dennis and Karen Simpson of Corning, California, Vicki and Bob Dorsey of Burwell, and Larry and Francis Simpson of Burwell; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard and Jeannie Ciemny of Wichita, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Jack and Katherine Ritter and Bud Ciemny; a daughter-in-law, Judy Turek; and a grandson-in-law, Levi Williams.

Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 6, 2024; at the Calamus Trinity Methodist Church in Burwell. Pastor David Busch will officiate.  Inurnment will be in the Cottonwood Cemetery at Burwell. Military Honors will be presented by the Clifford Clark American Legion Post #298. The family will receive friends on Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Still Waters Funeral Parlor.

Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at later date.
